King Charles III has been crowned in a ceremony at Westminster Abbey in Britain’s biggest ceremonial event for 70 years.
Attended by around 100 world leaders, the ceremony was also watched by a television audience of millions.
During the two-hour ceremony, Charles’ second wife, Camilla, was also crowned queen. The event was an attempt to reflect a more diverse country and a forward-looking institution while still acknowledging Britain’s history.
Despite the enthusiasm of some, there was public scepticism, particularly among the young, about the role and relevance of the monarchy. The coronation took place amid a cost of living crisis.
There were cheers from tens of thousands of people who watched the procession, but hundreds of republicans also booed and waved banners. Some saw it as a moment of history.
Meanwhile, Prince Harry was not given a formal role in the ceremony.
