According to Nigeria’s ambassador to Libya, Kabiru Musa, the federal government has repatriated 151 stranded Nigerians from Benghazi in Libya.
The evacuation was carried out in collaboration with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), and those evacuated include 71 females, 54 males, 14 children, and 13 infants. Musa said that this was the first voluntary evacuation in 2023 and that the evacuees would arrive at Lagos’ Murtala Mohammed Airport at 8 pm.
In 2022, the IOM and the ministry of foreign affairs, through the Nigerian Mission in Libya, repatriated around 4,000 stranded Nigerians. The ambassador emphasized that the voluntary repatriation offered a safe opportunity for those who wished to return to Nigeria and reunite with their families.
Officials from relevant government agencies would receive them on the ground and ensure their resettlement and reintegration into society. On Wednesday, more Nigerians are expected to be repatriated from Tripoli, and on April 3.
