Vice President, Kamala Harris, has embarked on a week-long tour of Africa to promote economic growth and strengthen ties between the United States and the continent.
Harris’ visit aims to increase US investment in Africa and counter the growing influence of rival powers, China and Russia, which have invested heavily in infrastructure and resource development.
In Ghana, the first stop of her tour, Harris met with President Nana Akufo-Addo and visited Cape Coast Castle.
During her visit, Harris plans to announce public and private-sector investments in Ghana, Tanzania, and Zambia, her other destinations.
“My weeklong trip to the continent of Africa is in recognition that African nations are critical to global prosperity and security – and their ideas and innovations will benefit the world.” Kamala Harris tweeted
The Biden administration’s efforts to strengthen ties with Africa come amid global competition over the continent’s future. By increasing investment and promoting economic growth, the US hopes to establish a long-lasting relationship with Africa and offer an alternative to the influence of China and Russia.
Harris’ visit is a positive step towards building a stronger relationship between the United States and Africa and promoting economic development on the continent.
