INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has reassured the public that the Presidential and National Assembly polls scheduled for February 25 will proceed as planned nationwide, despite protests and cash shortages in some regions.
Concerns had arisen about the possibility of election delays or disruptions after the Central Bank of Nigeria’s recent redesign of the N200, N500, and N1,000 notes, which has made it difficult for Nigerians to obtain the new currency.
However, Professor Yakubu confirmed that INEC is working closely with the Central Bank and security agencies to ensure a smooth election process.
Speaking to trainee Corps members, the INEC Chairman emphasized the importance of loyalty to Nigeria and its citizens, not political parties.
He also warned them against leaving the BVAS (Biometric Voter Accreditation System) in the custody of another and stated that they will be monitored for accountability.
Following a visit to the training centers, INEC officials and journalists went to the International Conference Centre, which will serve as the national collation centre for the announcement of election winners and presentation of Certificates of Returns (CoR) to the President and Vice President elect, as well as senators and house of representatives members elect.
