Corruption Fight Must Start with Leaders — Obasanjo

To eliminate corruption and foster effective leadership in Nigeria, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has emphasized that the fight against corruption must begin with the nation’s leaders.

Obasanjo stressed the need for a consistent and sustained approach to combating corruption during an interactive session held via Zoom on Sunday night.

The session, titled: “Boiling Point Arena,” was broadcast by private radio stations in Abeokuta, Ogun State’s capital, and focused on Obasanjo’s political legacy and his views on contemporary Nigeria.

Describing corruption as a deeply entrenched issue in Nigerian society, Obasanjo placed the blame squarely on those in positions of power.“Corruption is very hydra-headed and eats deep,” he remarked.

“I believe it was the Sultan of Sokoto, the father of the current Sultan, who once compared corruption to a babariga. If you fold it on one side, it unravels on the other. When you try to hold both sides, your hands are tied.

As soon as you let go, it falls apart again. That’s corruption.”Obasanjo further noted that addressing corruption requires a long-term commitment. “It’s not a one-day affair or something one regime can tackle alone,” he said.

“The fight must be consistent, continual, and part of our daily efforts. If any administration lets its guard down, corruption spreads again.”His comments highlight the pervasive nature of corruption and underscore the importance of leadership in driving change.
