Paul Onuachu breaks silence after Puskás nomination for stunning Trabzonspor goal

Super Eagles forward Paul Onuachu has broken his silence following his nomination for the prestigious FIFA Puskás Award, recognising the best goal of the year, Soccernet.ng reports.

The towering striker earned his place among the world’s elite thanks to a breathtaking acrobatic backheel finish during Trabzonspor’s match against Konyaspor last season.

The goal, scored in the 85th minute, sealed a dramatic 2-1 victory and has drawn comparisons to Zlatan Ibrahimović’s most iconic strikes.

In an interview quoted by Turkish outlet 61saat, Onuachu expressed gratitude for the recognition and credited Trabzonspor’s fans for their unwavering support during his time at the club.

“I had wonderful days there. I always felt the incredible support of the fans. Their contribution to my success is great,” said the Nigerian international.

Onuachu’s strike joins a shortlist that includes spectacular efforts from Mohammed Kudus and Alejandro Garnacho, setting up fierce competition for the award.

Despite his stellar performances in Turkey, where he netted 17 goals and provided four assists in 25 appearances, Onuachu endured a tough spell in England after joining Southampton in January 2023. The forward failed to score in 12 appearances for the Saints, leading to his season-long loan to Trabzonspor.

Currently back at Southampton, Onuachu faces an uncertain future. Trabzonspor have reportedly expressed strong interest in re-signing the 30-year-old, with discussions ongoing about a potential permanent deal.
