Nigeria’s national grid collapses again, marking 11th incident in 2024

Nigeria’s national electricity grid has collapsed for the second time in two days, leaving the country facing another power crisis.

The latest breakdown, which occurred on Thursday, follows a similar collapse on Tuesday, bringing the total number of grid failures in 2024 to 11.

As of 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nigeria’s 22 power plants were only able to generate 2,323 megawatts (MW) of electricity, a drastic drop from the peak generation of 3,743 MW earlier that morning. By midday, power generation had fallen to zero, with no electricity being produced at all.
