Tinubu Moves to Stop Planned August 1st Protests

In a proactive move aimed at quelling the momentum of the planned #EndBadGovernance protest scheduled for August 1, the federal government has mobilized top ministers, government officials, and influential figures across the country. The initiative, spearheaded by George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), saw a high-level meeting convened with President Bola Tinubu and key ministers, including Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Adviser, to strategize on preemptive measures.

Following the strategic session, it was decided that several ministers would engage state governors during the 143rd session of the National Economic Council scheduled at the Council Chamber of the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja on Thursday. The objective is to garner support from state leaders in preventing the escalation of the protest, which organizers have been promoting vigorously through social media channels.

The planned protest, primarily aimed at highlighting economic hardships and governance issues, continues to gather momentum online despite efforts by government officials to deter its occurrence. Organizers, operating discreetly, have been utilizing social media platforms to galvanize support and mobilize participants nationwide.

Addressing reporters after the meeting at the SGF’s office, Idris Mohammed, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, reiterated the government’s commitment to averting the protest. He emphasized that President Bola Tinubu and the assembled ministers are intensifying efforts to address grievances and improve governance, urging Nigerians to consider alternative avenues for expressing concerns.

Earlier in the week, President Bola Tinubu had appealed to citizens to suspend plans for the protest, underscoring ongoing efforts by the administration to address national challenges through dialogue and constructive engagement. As tensions remain high ahead of the proposed demonstration, the federal government’s mobilization signals a concerted effort to maintain stability and address grievances through proactive measures.

Femi Falana speaking to newsmen said that it was the right of the citizens to protest if they were unhappy with how the country is being run, he further pointed out that it was the responsibility of the government to ensure that protesters are kept safe.
