As part of repair efforts, the Federal Government is intensifying security measures on the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos by installing closed-circuit television (CCTV) and solar lights.
For several weeks, repairs have been ongoing on one of Africa’s longest bridges, leading to traffic congestion for motorists and other travelers.
Expected to reopen soon, Works Minister David Umahi highlighted in an interview with Channels Television that the repair efforts also involve the installation of CCTV cameras to address crime and illegal activities around the bridge.
David Umahi mentioned; “When we talk about the comprehensive rehabilitation of the bridge, we’re focusing on the deck. The necessary funds have been allocated by Mr. President, and I can confirm that 99 percent of the project is completed. However, there are additional tasks ahead, including the installation of solar lights and the replacement of generator-powered lights with solar-powered ones.”
“We are putting up CCTV both on top of the bridge and under the bridge because the president told me that part of the problem we are having is people who are doing illegal mining of the sand. And I agree with him. I have seen it. They even go as far as destroying the concrete to anchor their small boats.”
