At the 66th Grammy Awards ceremony, the organizers unintentionally created a moment of confusion when they played the late Nigerian Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s track ‘Water’ while announcing South African singer Tyla’s ‘Water’ as the winner of the inaugural Best African Music Performance category.
On Sunday, the Recording Academy officially declared Tyla’s ‘Water’ as the recipient of the first-ever Best African Music Performance award.
Tyla secured the win, surpassing tracks by notable Nigerian artists such as Davido’s ‘Unavailable,’ Asake’s ‘Amapiano,’ Burna Boy’s ‘City Boys,’ and Ayra Starr’s ‘Rush.’
