The Gombe State Independent Electoral Commission (GOSIEC) has scheduled April 27, 2024, for the chairmanship and councillorship elections in the 11 local government areas and 114 wards of the state.
Chairman of the commission, Sa’idu Shehu Awak, announced this on Thursday during an interaction with the leadership of political parties and election stakeholders in the state.
He mentioned that the commission provides interested political parties with 101 days’ notice to prepare and present their candidates for chairmanship and councillorship seats across the state.
“At this juncture, we wish to call on all political parties to ensure that they conduct their primaries within the timeframe that will be given to them.
“ We also wish to call on the leadership of all the political parties that intend to contest in this election to encourage their members and supporters to be law-abiding and respectful in their conduct of relationships with fellow players in politics.”
LEADERSHIP reports that the state organised local government council polls only once in the last four years, and caretaker committees had been running the councils since after the first election.
Our correspondent also observed that the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), the major opposition party in the state, was not present at the meeting.
