One person suspected to be giving information to bandits has been arrested.
A gang of gunmen suspected to be bandits have abducted five female students of Federal University in Dutsinma (FUDMA), Katsina State from their dormitories.
According to Daily Trust, the incident happened in the early hours of Wednesday, October 4, 2023, at the institution’s off-campus dormitories around Wednesday Market in Dutsinma.
A student of the institution who spoke to the newspaper said that two of the kidnapped students were in their final year.
“Five of them (the students) were kidnapped, they are from Kano and Nasarawa states and two of them are final year students,” the student said.
Confirming the incident, Habibu Umar Aminu, the head of the Public Relations Unit of the university said the incident happened around 2 am. He added that efforts were being made to rescue the victims.
According to the police spokesperson in Katsina State, ASP Sadiq Aliyu Abubakar, one person suspected to be giving information to bandits has been arrested in connection with the abduction of the students.
He also said that some people had been arrested for their suspected involvement in the abduction.
This is the second time in two weeks that bandits would invade students residences in Northern Nigeria to kidnap them.
On Friday, September 22, 2023, bandits invaded students’ apartments in Sabon Gida Village near the Federal University, Gusau in Zamfara State and abducted about 30 undergraduates most of whom were female students.
According to the police, the bandits invaded the community, riding on 50 motorcycles with sophisticated weapons.
