Edo Guber: Parties May Cede Governorship Ticket To Central

Strong indications have emerged from an ‘agreement’ reached by key political leaders and parties in Edo State to cede the 2024 governorship ticket to Edo Central senatorial district as agitation among people of the zone persists.

A reliable source who is in the know confided in LEADERSHIP that the decision was reached after a meeting held in Benin by Edo South senatorial district political opinion leaders in the spirit of equity, justice and fairness.

It was gathered that their decision to see Edo Central produce Obaseki’s successor was informed by the need to sustain the cordial and harmonious relationship among the three senatorial districts in the interest of peace, unity and development of the entire state.

Over 56 percent numerical voting strength of the seven local government areas in Edo South has remained the determining factor on which of the three senatorial districts should produce the governor of Edo State in 2024.

If the said agreement stands, Edo Central will produce the governor next year, while Edo South will have the deputy governor, and Edo North – speaker, which the zone already has.

The source said, “This agreement I can authoritatively tell you enjoy the support of the majority of the stakeholders in attendance and we are all determine to ensure that Edo Central produce the next governor. However, this decision is not binding at all on political parties but we will do all within our powers to see this happens.”

Meanwhile, a prominent Edo politician, Hon Charles Idahosa, in a veil support for Edo central governorship in a recent interview urged all major political parties to select their gubernatorial candidates from Edo central in the spirit of impartiality and justice.

Idahosa emphasised that this recommendation was crucial, given that the leaders of significant political parties, including the APC, PDP, and LP, hail from Edo central, which also includes the national chairman of the Labour Party.
