Key opposition figures, including former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai and close allies of ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar, convened for a private meeting at the Social Democratic Party (SDP) national secretariat in Abuja on Tuesday.
The closed-door gathering has ignited widespread speculation about a potential coalition to challenge President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections. Among those in attendance were Maj. Hamza Al-Mustapha, a former presidential candidate and Chief Security Officer to the late Gen. Sani Abacha, and Atiku’s former spokesman, Otunba Segun Showunmi.
Although the agenda was not explicitly disclosed, participants hinted at a strategic effort to unite opposition forces under a shared vision for Nigeria’s future. Otunba Segun Showunmi described the meeting in a Facebook post as a “strategic gathering” led by SDP Chairman Shehu Gabam, aimed at reviewing the state of opposition politics in Nigeria.
