The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) recorded 174 electricity-related accidents nationwide between January and September 2024, a 38% increase from 126 incidents in the same period in 2023.
The accidents, attributed to illegal connections, wire snaps, vandalism, and unsafe practices, resulted in 76 injuries and 86 fatalities, with the highest fatalities occurring in the second quarter.
Injuries fluctuated across the quarters, highlighting inconsistent safety measures in the sector.
NERC called for stricter enforcement of safety standards, better compliance by Distribution Companies, and public awareness campaigns to reduce risks.
The commission also emphasized prompt maintenance of infrastructure and oversaw victim compensation processes to ensure fairness.
It reiterated its commitment to improving safety, stressing that the power sector must urgently address these issues to protect lives and infrastructure.
