Subscribers Threaten Lawsuit Over Proposed 100% Telecom Tariff Hike

Telecom subscribers are planning to sue operators over a proposed 100% increase in service tariffs, citing concerns about affordability and fairness.

Telecom operators argue the hike is necessary to address rising operational costs, but the National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers (NATCOMS) has rejected the proposal.

NATCOMS President Adeolu Ogunbanjo vowed to file a class-action lawsuit if the hike proceeds without exploring alternative funding options, such as raising capital through the stock market.

The proposed increase would double costs, raising call rates from N11 to N22 per minute and 1GB of data from N1,000 to N2,000. NATCOMS warns this would disproportionately impact low-income users.

MTN and other operators have submitted the proposal to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), which is still reviewing it.

While operators warn that delays could affect service quality, NATCOMS insists subscribers should not bear the burden of rising costs.
