Reps Push for 41 Supreme Court Justices

The House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review is considering a bill to amend the 1999 Constitution, increasing the number of Supreme Court Justices from 21 to 41.

Sponsored by Reps Mansur Soro and Oluwole Oke, the bill aims to address the workload of the apex court.

Currently, the court operates with 20 Justices, following recent retirements.

Soro argued that the expansion would ensure faster justice delivery, stating, “Justice delayed is justice denied.”

The bill, which seeks to amend Section 230 of the Constitution, will be reviewed at a public hearing in early 2025.

The National Assembly targets December 2025 to finalize constitutional amendments.
