The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brig. Gen. Yushau Ahmed Dogara, has reaffirmed the scheme’s strict stance against protests and indiscipline among corps members.
During a recent visit to the temporary orientation camp in Kaduna, Dogara highlighted the NYSC’s zero-tolerance policy for protests, emphasizing that disciplinary actions have been taken against several corps members who attempted to stage protests in the last three months.
He urged corps members to familiarize themselves with the scheme’s bylaws, which clearly outline the penalties for misconduct.
“In NYSC, just like in the Army and Police, we don’t allow protests because we are disciplined and law-abiding.
So, whenever anybody wants to deceive you, go back and read your bylaws,” Dogara stated.
He noted that disciplinary measures had been taken against some corps members for violating these rules.
“In the last three months, we’ve had a few corps members who were indisciplined.
They attempted to protest, and we are holding them accountable for their actions,” he added.
The DG also expressed serious concerns about the safety risks associated with night journeys, citing accidents and kidnappings that have claimed the lives of corps members.
He strongly advised against traveling at night, stressing that such journeys endanger lives.
“My concern has been these incessant night journeys that have claimed so many lives.
Sometimes they involve accidents; other times, kidnappings, and we never recover them,” Dogara lamented.
“One of my top priorities is the security and welfare of corps members, which is why I always stress these issues wherever I go.”
In a positive development, Dogara announced that the federal government has approved a significant increase in corps members’ monthly allowances, raising the stipend from N33,000 to N77,000.
He assured corps members that the increment would take effect soon, pending the completion of required processes, including cash backing.
“Whenever the government increases salaries, we in the NYSC approach the government for an increment in corps members’ allowances, and they have always responded positively,” he said.
This adjustment reflects the government’s commitment to supporting the welfare of corps members, Dogara emphasized.
