Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Monday commissioned the newly constructed Abiola-Onijemo Link Road and Bridge in the Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government Area, along with the Alapere Pedestrian Bridge.
The Abiola-Onijemo Link Road and Bridge provide a crucial connection between the Abiola/Ajayi/Ogba and Obawole/Iju-Ishaga communities, previously separated by a 25-meter swamp.
Spanning a total of 643 meters, the project includes a 135-meter reinforced concrete bridge with retaining walls, 7.3-meter-wide carriageways, slip roads, walkways, and solar-powered street lighting to cater to the area’s growing population.
This project is one of 36 roads and bridges slated for inauguration under the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration.
Speaking at the unveiling, Governor Sanwo-Olu described the project as a testament to his administration’s commitment to resolving infrastructure deficits and improving the quality of life for Lagosians.
“This project embodies our administration’s promise to tackle long-standing challenges like inadequate infrastructure and flooding,” Sanwo-Olu said.
“Previously, crossing between Abiola and Onijemo Streets was unsafe, as residents relied on a wooden bridge over a swamp.
This new reinforced concrete bridge, complete with pedestrian and vehicular access, eliminates those risks while providing modern, durable infrastructure.
”He added that the link road and bridge symbolize more than just physical infrastructure.
“This is about connecting lives, fostering unity, and driving economic growth. Improved access and reduced travel time will bring new opportunities for trade, commerce, and investment to this community.
”Sanwo-Olu urged residents of Abiola and Onijemo Streets to take responsibility for maintaining the infrastructure.
Special Adviser on Infrastructure, Olufemi Daramola, commended the governor’s unwavering commitment to delivering impactful projects across Lagos.
He emphasized the importance of the link road, which connects College Road via Ajayi Street in Ogba to Aruna, Obawole, and Iju-Ishaga, boosting vehicular movement, cutting travel times, and encouraging local commerce.
