The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has cautioned bakeries nationwide against incorporating saccharin and bromate in bread production, citing potential health risks.
Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, the agency’s Director-General, issued the warning during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), emphasizing that violators would face strict penalties. She highlighted the role of post-marketing surveillance in maintaining compliance.
“This is where our post-marketing surveillance plays a crucial role,” she said.
Prof. Adeyeye also noted NAFDAC’s ongoing efforts to ensure product safety across industries, mentioning closures of water-producing factories that failed to meet hygiene and quality standards.
“Our Regulatory Inspection Directorate is key to ensuring that products in the market match the standards approved during registration,” she explained.
“Sometimes, after registration, producers alter the production process or formula, which is unacceptable.
“The Director-General stressed the importance of consistent monitoring to uphold standards. “Post-marketing surveillance ensures that what is approved remains consistent in the market.
“This is what we refer to as market control,” she concluded.
NAFDAC’s warning underscores its commitment to safeguarding public health through strict regulatory enforcement.
