Boniface recovers from car crash to help Leverkusen secure draw against Werder Bremen

Super Eagles and Bayer 04 Leverkusen striker, Victor Okoh Boniface, was on target as his club drew away to Werder Bremen in the German Bundesliga, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 23-year-old missed Die Werkself’s midweek UEFA Champions League clash against Brest but was recalled into Xabi Alonso’s starting eleven as they travelled to Weser Stadion.

The Nigerian striker broke the deadlock on the half hour mark, tapping home with his left foot from a Jeremie Frimpong cross to score his sixth league goal of the season.

The away side continued to press on for the game’s second in the first half but the home side came with guns blazing in the second half.

Victor Boniface was withdrawn in 70th minute and was replaced by Patrik Schick. Four minutes later, Werder drew level. A brilliant through ball Julian Malatini was swept home brilliantly by Marvin Ducksch.

Leverkusen encountered a stroke of luck three minutes later as they went in front but only for a few minutes. A shot from Patrik Schick was blocked, but an onrushing Felix Agu couldn’t get out of the way and the German full-back bundled the ball into his own net, giving the away side the lead.

Nigeria-eligible attacker, Felix Njinmah turned provider off the bench in the 90th minute, feeding a pass into Romano Schmidt’s path. The German struck the ball from outside the box, way beyond Lukas Hradecky’s reach.

Leverkusen are currently third in the Bundesliga, five points behind league leaders, RB Leipzig.
