Official: Super Eagles star Frank Onyeka joins Germany’s Augsburg from Brentford to reunite with 54yo Jess Thorup

In a last-minute move before the transfer window closed, FC Augsburg bolstered their midfield by securing Nigerian international Frank Onyeka on a season-long loan from Premier League club Brentford, Soccernet.ng reports.

The German Bundesliga club announced the signing of the Super Eagles midfielder on their official media channels.

This transfer reunites Onyeka with FC Augsburg’s 54-year-old head coach Jess Thorup, under whom he previously thrived at Danish club FC Midtjylland.

Between 2017 and 2021, Onyeka made 123 appearances for Midtjylland, contributing significantly before his move to Brentford.

At the English club, Onyeka featured in 69 Premier League matches, scoring one goal and providing four assists. He also boasts 25 caps for Nigeria and has six Champions League appearances under his belt from his time in Denmark.

Onyeka expressed his enthusiasm for the move, saying, “With the loan to FC Augsburg, I hope to get a lot of playing time and am looking forward to being able to play an active role in the team straight away.

“I hope for a successful season and look forward to working with Jess Thorup again. I can’t wait to get to know the fans and the rest of the team.”

FC Augsburg’s sporting director Marinko Jurendic highlighted the importance of this signing, stating,

“The opportunity to bring Frank Onyeka to FCA was a chance we wanted to take. With his international experience, athletic ability and robustness, he brings a strong presence to the pitch.

“We are very happy that Frank has decided to join us. We wish him a good start and much success at FCA.”

Onyeka, who signed a new four-year contract with Brentford in August 2023, will join Augsburg after participating in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers with Nigeria.

The midfielder, who remains a key part of Brentford’s long-term plans, will add depth and strength to Augsburg’s midfield for the upcoming Bundesliga season.
