The Network of Civil Society Organisations in Aba has expressed concern over the rising spate of killings and general insecurity in the commercial town.
This is contained in a communique signed by the coalition and made available to newsmen in Aba on Wednesday.
The body argued that the
security breaches posed a significant challenge to the status of Aba as the commercial nerve centre of the South-East.
According to the communique, the commercial city of Aba, known for its peace and vibrancy, has recently been marred by a series of security incidents that have left residents in fear and anxiety.
It said: “Since the first attack at the Milverton army checkpoint on May 17, there have been multiple assaults on security personnel by gunmen, resulting in the tragic death of both security agents and civilians.
“These disturbing events are rapidly altering the security narrative of Aba, creating an environment of uncertainty and apprehension among it’s residents.
The coalition also called on the protesters of the planned nationwide protest against hunger and bad governance, set to commence on August 1, to be peaceful.
It said the proposed protest had further heightened tension with palpable fear that it could be hijacked by hoodlums to incite further violence.
It also raised concern that security forces might confront the protesters, despite directives from the Inspector-General of Police for commands to provide security for peaceful demonstrators.
It called on the State Government and security agencies to intensify efforts to uncover the root cause of the growing insecurity in Aba and take decisive measures to combat it.
It further demanded for protection for protesters, in line with the directives of the Inspector-General of Police “as peaceful protest is enshrined in our constitution and must be upheld.
“We urge all the Aba residents to conduct the planned protests peacefully and responsibly.
“It is imperative that we remain vigilant, identify, and report to any security agency, any individuals attempting to hijack the protest,” the communique added. (NAN)
