President Bola Tinubu has given the green light for Prof. John Obafunwa to step into the role of Director-General at the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR). As mentioned by Ajuri Ngelale, the President’s spokesperson, the transition from Prof. Babatunde Salako to Prof. Obafunwa will occur on July 24, following the conclusion of Prof. Salako’s tenure on July 23.
In the statement released, President Tinubu expressed appreciation for Prof. Salako’s dedication and service to the nation. Ajuri said “The President looks forward to Prof. Obafunwa leveraging his extensive expertise and qualifications to advance NIMR’s mission of spearheading research on public health diseases in Nigeria”.
Prof. Obafunwa’s academic journey includes obtaining his medical degree from the University of Lagos in 1980, specializing in Anatomic Pathology in 1987, and further specializing in Forensic Pathology in Scotland in 1991. His pursuit of knowledge also led him to attain a law degree in England in 2004. With memberships in professional bodies across the UK, USA, and Nigeria, Prof. Obafunwa brings a wealth of experience from his work in various countries before returning to Nigeria in 2004 to join the Lagos State University College of Medicine as a Professor of Forensic Pathology.
