The Senate President of Nigeria, Sen. Godswill Akpabio, has tendered an apology to his colleague, Sen. Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, for remarks he made when he interrupted her at last week’s plenary.
Akpabio claimed he would never purposefully disparage a woman in his apology, which he delivered during Tuesday, July 23, 2024 plenary.
“Distinguished Senator Natasha, I want to apologise to you. The interest shown on social media shows that we have enemies. I felt I should tender a public apology to you. I do not mean any harm”, Senator Godswill Akpabio started.
“I have a wife and four daughters. I will not intentionally denigrate any woman and I always pray that God will uplift women.”
“People should concentrate on things that will move this country forward. Social media handlers should practice with decorum. We won’t out of anger regulate social media.”
Recall that Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan was instructed by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, not to speak until he had given her permission to do so because, according to him, the Senate is not a “nightclub.”
His remarks sparked a social media firestorm as numerous women’s organisations criticised him for being discriminatory and demeaning to women.
