Euro 2024: Ivan Toney matches Frank Onyeka’s record following England’s win over Netherlands

England and Brentford striker, Ivan Toney, has equalled a club record held only by Super Eagles midfielder, Frank Onyeka, Soccernet.ng reports.

Onyeka was featured in all of Nigeria’s games at the AFCON 2023 tournament, helping the Super Eagles to a silver medal in Ivory Coast. Over the course of the tournament, he was praised for his strength as he helped Jose Peseiro’s men keep the midfield tidy by doing the dirty work.

Nigeria’s run to the final made Frank Onyeka the first-ever Brentford player to reach the final of a major tournament with their National team.

Ivan Toney, who is a part of the England team at the Euro 2024 tournament, has also achieved the feat after Ollie Watkins’ late goal at the Signal Iduna Park last night sent the Three Lions to the final.

Toney and Onyeka have shared the pitch together for the same team forty-six times, averaging 1.24 points per game, and were crucial in the second half of the season as they helped Brentford secure Premier League safety.

Both players might also be on their way out of the Gtech Community Stadium. Toney has been linked with a move away from the club for a while, and his contract expires in the summer of 2025, meaning Brentford might have to cash in on him during the transfer window, or else they risk losing him for free next year.

As per The Athletic, Frank Oyenka has been alerted that he can leave the club if an offer comes in. Thomas Frank views the 25-cap Nigerian midfielder as an integral part of his plans, but also understands the player’s frustration of constantly sitting on the bench.

Toney will be hoping to help England to Euro 2024 victory over Spain at the Olimpiastadion in Berlin.
