The Action People’s Party (APP), a prominent opposition party, has announced its participation in the Rivers State Local Government Councils Elections scheduled for 5th October 2024. The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) confirmed the election date last Monday.

In a statement issued by the Deputy Publicity Secretary, Emeka Uwazurike, the APP reaffirmed its commitment to youth and women’s inclusion in politics by offering free nomination forms to young and female aspirants seeking to contest in the October elections.

“As stated last Monday, following the RSIEC’s announcement of the election date, the party has initiated the process for full participation,” Uwazurike said. “In support of youth and female involvement in the political process, we are issuing free forms to aspirants seeking our ticket for the upcoming polls.”

Uwazurike also commended the Executive Governor of Rivers State, Sim Fubara, for his commitment to democratic principles, noting his approval for the RSIEC to conduct the elections. He contrasted this with other governors who have delayed local elections in favour of appointing caretaker committees.

“It is by this show of concern in the consolidation of democracy in the state that our party’s confidence has been restored, and we are fully participating in the exercise with firm belief that we will win, thanks to the pace set by Governor Fubara and RSIEC Chairman, Retired Justice Adolphus Enebeli,” Uwazurike added.
The APP urged other governors and State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECs) to follow Rivers State’s example and expedite plans for local government elections to end the undemocratic practice of appointing caretaker committees.
