President Tinubu Bans Ministers, Others, From Government-Funded Foreign Trips

Ministers, heads of agencies, and other government employees are not permitted to go abroad on public funds, according to a directive from President Tinubu.

The prohibition will take effect on April 1, 2024, and it will endure for a period of three months.

This was written in a letter dated March 12, 2024, addressed to George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, and signed by the Chief of Staff of President Femi Gbajabiamila.

President Bola Tinubu issued an order in January 2024 to cut down on the number of individuals travelling with him both domestically and abroad, stating that the members of his delegation shouldn’t consist of more than 25 for domestic travel and 20 for international travel.

This directive followed the criticism he received both during and after the most recent Conference of Parties (COP28), which was held in the United Arab Emirates and was attended by roughly 590 officials from Nigeria.

Some parts of the letter stated that, “Considering the current economic challenges and the need for responsible fiscal management, I am writing to communicate Mr President’s directive to place a temporary ban on all public funded international trips for all Federal Government officials at all levels, for an initial period of three months from Ist April 2024.”

The ban, according to the letter approved by president Tinubu was aimed at reducing costs in governance in consideration of the economic crisis bedevilling the country.
