The senator representing Bauchi Central at the red chambers, Senator Abdul Ningi, has resigned from his position as the chairman of the Northern Senators Forum.
Senator Ningi’s letter of resignation, dated March 11, 2024, was made public shortly after the Senate placed Ningi on suspension for three months due to remarks he made regarding the purported padding of the 2024 budget.
On Tuesday, March 12, 2024, Ningi was suspended due to his claims that the project implementation failed to account for approximately N3.7 trillion of the budget.
Senator Jimoh Ibrahim of the All Progressives Congress(APC) representing Ondo South in an additional motion, had asked the Senate to suspend Ningi for an initial period of twelve months. Ibrahim’s motion was seconded by Senator Edeh Dafinone from the same party representing Delta Central.
Later on, Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong of the All Progressives Congress(APC) representing Cross River South moved a counter motion that the suspension be reduced from twelve months to six months and his motion was seconded by Senator Barinada Mpigi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
However, a motion for the suspension of Ningi to last for three months was moved by Senator Musa Garba Maidoki of PDP representing Kebbi South and seconded by Senator Sani Musa of PDP representing Niger East.
After the motions were put to vote by Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, the Senate passed a resolution to suspend the lawmaker for three months.
Senator Ningi will not be allowed to participate in any 10th Senate activity during the three-month ban.
