FCT School Sports Festival: Actions Resume In Ball, Court Events

Actions in the ongoing resuscitated FCT School Sports Festival resumed yesterday after Saturday and Sunday were observed as official rest days by the athletes, officials and other participants across all the eight designated centers.

The festival which is broadly divided into three categories – Primary Schools (13 and Under), Juniors Secondary (15 and Under), and Senior Secondary (17 and Under) began on Thursday with track and field events taking centre stage in all of the centers.

Preliminary events like football, volleyball, handball, basketball, badminton, table tennis, middle distance races, and scrabble; as well as chess, judo and ayo will hold from today at the Abaji, Kwali, Kuje, Gwagwalada, Tunga Maje, Karshi, Dutse-Alhaji and Tudun Wada centers and would last until March 2, 2024 when the curtains will fall on the eliminations.

According to the organisers, top two finishing athletes from the zonal eliminations will converge at the Main Bowl of  MKO Abiola National Stadium Abuja for the grand finale slated for

March 11 to 14, 2024.

Meanwhile, FCT Minister, Barrister Nyesom Ezenwo Wike and department of school sports in the FCT, have been commended for reviving the grassroots sports festival, which was last held during administration Gen. Jeremiah Useni (Rtd) as minister of FCT, 25 years ago.

The principal of JSS Abaji, Mr. Michael Ogundipe, gave the thumbs up, while speaking on the sidelines of Day-1 of the competition in Abaji.

According to Ogundipe, the rebirth of the fiesta, was a sure way of ensuring that children of school age are given an inclusive path to their complete development.
