The Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shuaibu, on Thursday, secured the governorship ticket of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) after emerging as winner of the parallel primaries of the party for the forthcoming governorship election in the state.
While Governor Godwin Obaseki’s faction of the party was yet to commence the election, the party delegates affirmed their support for Shuaibu while insisting they were the bonafide delegates.
Shuaibu won the parallel primaries with 301 votes. Announcing the results of the primaries, an electoral officer stated that after counting the votes from the primaries, Shuaibu had a total of 301 votes and therefore, was declared the authentically elected candidate of the PDP primaries.
Ten PDP aspirants were hoping for the gubernatorial ticket of the party. Among them is a former chairman of Sterling Bank, Asue Ighodalo, and Blessing Igbinedion, daughter of Esama of Benin Kingdom, Chief Gabriel Igbinedion.
Others include Anselm Ojezua, Felix Alkabue, Martin Uhomoibhi, Arthur Esene, Hadizat Umoru, Dr Earl Onaiwu and Omoregie Ogbeide-Ihama.
Recall that there has been a rift between the Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, and his Deputy, Philip Shuaibu over the latter’s intentions to succeed his principal.
