The Lagos State government, through its Commissioner of Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, has recently issued a stern warning to owners or occupiers of residential buildings that have been illegally converted to other purposes such as churches, mosques, clubhouses, lounges, and bars without the necessary approvals for change of use.
The government has given a 30-day ultimatum to the affected owners to revert the buildings to their original use or face the possibility of having the buildings removed altogether after the expiration of the ultimatum.
His tweet says “The notice is a sequel to the distortion of the masterplan of Lagos State, especially residential areas, by some people who in gross disregard to the regulatory provisions of the law turned residential areas into clubhouses and worship centers thereby constituting a nuisance to the environment.”
This move is aimed at curbing the growing trend of unauthorized building conversions in the state which often pose significant safety hazards to residents and the public. The government is urging affected owners to comply with the directive in the interest of public safety and to avoid any unpleasant consequences that may arise from non-compliance.
