Former Central Bank Governor Godwin Emefiele has secured a partial reprieve from travel restrictions imposed as part of his bail conditions. Justice Hamza Muazu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court granted Emefiele’s request to leave Abuja, but stipulated that he must remain within Nigerian borders.
This marks a significant development in the ongoing legal saga surrounding Emefiele, who faces charges of procurement fraud and other alleged offenses. Previously, he was confined to the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) as part of his bail terms.
The court’s decision came after Emefiele’s lawyer, Mathew Bukka, filed an application for a variation of the bail conditions. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) did not object to the request, provided Emefiele submitted a written undertaking to remain in Nigeria.
However, the legal drama surrounding the former CBN governor continues. The court also amended the charges against Emefiele from six to 20, including criminal breach of trust, forgery, and conspiracy to commit a felony.
