“He had no clue of what he was doing”- Mikel on former Chelsea coach

The Israeli manager took Chelsea to the final of the UEFA Champions League, but Mikel feels he was not a good coach

Former Super Eagles midfielder Mikel Obi has revealed that former Chelsea coach Avram Grant did not know anything about tactics during his time af the club, Soccernet reports.

Chelsea have had a plethora of coaches since former owner Roman Abramovich took over in June 2003. One of the various managers that Chelsea had was Grant.

The Israeli coach replaced Jose Mourinho as the Blues’ interim coach in the 2007/2008 season, and he had a decent record, helping the club to the Champions League and League Cup finals. Chelsea also gave a good push for the title but ultimately lost it to Manchester United.

Despite his decent finish, Mikel is of the opinion that Grant knew nothing about tactics.

“For me, he [Avram Grant] just wasn’t a manager,” Mikel told ex-teammate Florent Malouda on the The Obi One Podcast.

“He wasn’t a manager because he had no clue of what he was doing. He absolutely had no clue.

“He had someone who does the training and someone who does the training – and all he does is come in and tell us stories about Michael Jordan and a fire that is burning somewhere.

“But it worked for him because he took us to a Champions League final.”

Unfortunately for Grant, he was fired at the end of the season after a trophy-less campaign. It was not a surprise at the time because Abrahimovic was results-oriented at the time.
