Grange School, Ikeja and St. Saviours’ School, Ikoyi, at the weekend emerged winners of the 2023 Ikoyi Club 1938 Inter-School Swimming Meet.
Grange took top position in the Secondary Schools’ category with Children International School (CIS) in second and British International School finishing third while St. Saviour won the Primary School category which had CIS in second and Corona School in third position.
The highpoint of the one day event which had 54 events competed for by 380 participants representing 36 schools across all the local governments in Lagos state were the top six which had top finishers in the categories competed against one another.
A total of 366 swimmers participated in 701 races.
88 swimmers won at least 1 medals. 26 of them won 3 medals each, 21 of them won two and 41 won one medal each
Aidan Dumuje-Aibili won the secondary school champions’ final leaving Kashope Obatoyinbo and Temidayo Adenusi in second and third placements while Chioma Kanu tops Demilade Akanbi and Maya Kuti to capture the girls’ secondary schools’ title.
Foladara Shokefun and Chizutelu Oguegbu won the boys’ and girls’ top six finals for the primary schools.
Chairman Ikoyi Club 1938, Tafar Zubir Aliyu commended the students for their sportsmanship conducts and expressed delight at the level of support to the programme by the parents and schools.
He pledged that Ikoyi Club will continue to be at the forefront of talents development in sports pointing that the club has in no small measure contributed to swimming development in Nigeria.
Mr. Fatayi Babatunde Williams, a two=time president of the Nigeria Swimming Federation and the current vice president of African Aquatics calls on other clubs in the country to emulate Ikoyi Club stressing that an expanded talent pool would enhance Nigeria’s potential to be among the leading forces in swimming globally.
Chairman, Ikoyi Club Swimming Section, Ikedichi Kanu advocates for a swimming league which he pointed would bring out the very best of swimming talents in the country.
“With what Ikoyi Club is doing in terms of developmental programmes in swimming, it won’t come as a surprise that in the next coming Olympics. Nigeria will not only be having representatives at the Games but would be contesting for medals as well,” Kanu said.
Games captain Akinbulejo Onabolu commended FLUTTERWAVE and Cadbury for their support.
