Carabao Cup: West Ham Face Liverpool, Newcastle Battle Chelsea In Quarterfinals

West Ham and Newcastle have secured their passage to the quarterfinals of Carabao Cup with hard-fought victories over Arsenal and Manchester United Wednesday’s night respectively, will face another tough hurdle to read the semifinals of the competition.

The Hammers will be heading to Anfield to play Liverpool while the Magpies faced with a trip to Chelsea, the quarterfinal draw conducted on Thursday morning has revealed.

In the two other ties drawn, Everton will welcome Fulham and the two remaining non-Premier League sides will face off when Championship Middlesbrough host League One surprise package Port Vale, meaning there will be a non-Premier League team in the final four.

The eight quarter-final matches will be played during the week commencing Monday 18 December.

Newcastle secured their place in the quarter-finals with a 3-0 win against Manchester United at Old Trafford – but after defeating Manchester City in the third round, Eddie Howe’s side face another tricky test as they go to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea.

West Ham’s reward for thrashing Arsenal 3-1 on Declan Rice’s return to the London Stadium is a tough tie against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool at Anfield. The Reds, fourth in the Premier League, are the highest-placed side left in the competition and advanced thanks to a hard-fought 2-1 win at Bournemouth, with Darwin Nunez coming off the bench to send the nine-time winners into the next round.

Only three of the remaining eight teams — Liverpool, five-time winners Chelsea, and 2004 winners Middlesbrough — have ever lifted the League Cup trophy before.

Port Vale are in the quarterfinals for the first time in their history after beating League Two Mansfield Town 1-0 on Tuesday.
