Nigerian Minister of Women Affairs Uju Kennedy-Ohaneye has threatened to sue the United Nations for allegedly mismanaging funds donated to Nigeria.
At a press conference in Abuja on Monday, Kennedy-Ohaneye accused the UN of collecting money on behalf of Nigeria without remitting it. She said that if the UN does not provide her ministry with the necessary records by November 15, she will take legal action.
“I stand here as the Minister of Women Affairs to demand from the UN an account of all the money they have raised from donors in Nigeria’s name. We want to see an account of what they have done with the money,” she said.
If we don’t see these reports published for Nigerians to see by November 15th, we are heading to court,” she warned. “From October 16th to November 8th, they will receive our pre-action letters. That is to prepare them for the fact that on the 15th, we are heading to court. And I am promising Nigerians that immediately it is that 15th, by the next day, you will hear the suit number and all of you; we will gather to that place for the case to come on, and call for them to call for them to defend the money they are using you to collect from donors.”
