Boniface, Ogbu join Xhaka, Sporting Lisbon’s Coates and other standout players in Europa League team of week

Victor Boniface has had an impressive start to his career for Bayer Leverkusen, registering 6 goals and 3 assists in all competitions

Super Eagles forward Victor Boniface and former Flying Eagles defender Igoh Ogbu have been named in the Europa League team of the week for the first round of matches played on Thursday, Soccernet.ng reports.

Boniface continued his impressive start to his career for Bayer Leverkusen with a goal and an assist against Swedish side BK Hacken in their Europa League opener at the Bay Arena on Thursday.

In the 10th minute, Boniface assisted Florian Wirtz in opening the scoring for Die Werkself before also getting on the scoresheet in the 66th minute as the German side began their campaign with a comfortable 4-0 victory.

In Switzerland, Ogbu also helped Slavia Prague claim a 2-0 victory over Servette with a perfect header in the 59th minute of the encounter at the Stade de Geneve in Geneva.

Football statistics website, Whoscored.com,  has named the Nigerian duo in the Europa League team of the week. They were named alongside Brighton and Hove Albion forward Joao Pedro, West Ham United midfielder James Ward-Prowse, Sporting Lisbon defender Sebastian Coates, and former Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka in the standout IX.

In the 3-4-3 formation, Boniface leads the line alongside Florian Wirtz and Joao Pedro both on the flanks, while Ogbu starts on the right side of the 3-man defense alongside Sebastian Coates and Sparta Prague’s Tomas Krejci.

Boniface will aim to continue his impressive start for Leverkusen when they host newly promoted Heidenheim at the weekend, while Ogbu will be looking to make a positive impact for Slavia Prague in a top-of-the-table derby against city rivals Sparta Prague on Sunday.
