The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has alerted the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and its 2023 presidential candidate, Sen. Rabiu Kwankwaso, of alleged plans by some groups to change the party’s logo and amend its constitution.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that Mr. Peter Ogah, in a letter to INEC, the party’s solicitors, said the NNPP was informed of the plans by some individuals to change the party’s logo and amend its constitution.
Ogah said the party’s leadership had not authorised any such changes, and urged INEC to disregard any attempt to make unauthorised changes to the party’s logo or constitution.
“We act as solicitors to the New Nigeria Peoples Party, represented by Dr Boniface Okechukwu Aniebonam, the Founder and Dr Temitope Aluko, the Chairman. Board of Trustees and we write upon their instruction.
“Our client, however, informed us that while the board is preparing for the said meeting, their attention was drawn to a news item in the media.
“Our client informed us that some individuals are taking steps to change the NNPP’s logo, and to also amend the party’s Constitution, hence the need to place this caveat immediately.
“The commission is hereby formally notified of the unauthorised and fraudulent plans by some individuals to change the NNPP logo and amend its constitution.
“So that same must not be countenanced or registered by the commission as the alterations and amendments sort to be smuggled did not emanate from the party,” he said.
In a separate letter to Kwankwaso, the NNPP solicitors said the party had terminated the memorandum of understanding (MoU) it signed with the Kwankwasya group for the 2023 general elections.
The MoU was signed on February 21, 2022, and it was for the purpose of using the NNPP as a platform for the 2023 general elections.
The solicitors said the NNPP had fulfilled its obligations under the MoU, and that it was now time to terminate the agreement.
They thanked Kwankwaso and his group for their cooperation, and wished them the best in their future political endeavours.
The NNPP’s move to alert INEC and Kwankwaso of the alleged plans to change the party’s logo and amend its constitution comes amid a factional crisis in the party.
A faction of the party, led by Major Agbo, expelled Kwankwaso on September 5, 2023, over his alleged anti-party activities and misappropriation of party campaign funds.
