The Ibadan Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has successfully obtained convictions and handed down sentences to thirteen individuals involved in cybercrime.
The convicted cybercriminals, including Ibikunle Innocent, Akerele Ayobami Emmanuel, Olawale Iskilu Odunmbaku, Abubakry Oluwapelumi Faruk, Samson Omotolani Adepeko, Ademola Lateef Babatunde, Afeez Babalola Bolaji, Akinlade Gbemileke Samson, Arowolo Ololade Abdulazeez, Kadiri Oluwasegun Abdulsodiq, Bamgbade Clement Oluwadamilare, Abiodun Olukoya Ibrahim, and Sotunde Tobi Okikiola, were arraigned before Justices Ladiran Akintola and A.O. Lajide of the Oyo State High Court in Ibadan, and Justice B.B. Adebowale of the Ogun State High Court in Abeokuta. Each defendant faced a single count charge related to cybercrime.
During the proceedings, all the defendants pleaded “guilty” to the charges brought against them.
As a result, the prosecution counsel, including Modupe Akinkoye, Oluwatoyin Owodunni, Shamsudeen Bashir, Adamu Sahabi, Ibukun Olatinwo, A.M. Aliyu, Umar Abiso, Odemuyiwa Damilare, Fatima Baba, and Z.M. Tijani, presented the facts of the cases, submitted various documents as exhibits, and requested the courts to convict and sentence the defendants accordingly.
Justice Akintola, after considering the submissions, sentenced Akerele to one year imprisonment and a fine of N250,000.00K (Two Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira). Okikiola received a sentence of six months of community service and a fine of N250,000.00K. Olukoya was sentenced to one year imprisonment or a fine of N100,000.00K (One Hundred Thousand Naira), while Oni received a sentence of two years imprisonment or a fine of N250,000.00K.
Furthermore, Justice Lajide convicted and sentenced Bamgbade, Bolaji, Babatunde, Adepeko, Faruk, and Odunmbaku to six months of community service each. Justice Adebowale convicted and sentenced Abdulrasaq, Arowolo, and Akinlade to three months imprisonment each without the option of a fine.
The convicts were also ordered to compensate their victims and forfeit all recovered items, including two Toyota Venza vehicles, to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
