Apongbon Bridge in Lagos State was officially reopened by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Saturday, marking the end of a 15-month closure caused by a devastating fire that erupted at the nearby Apongbon market.
The blaze, which occurred on March 23, 15 months ago, created a sense of panic among road users and motorists in the vicinity. The early morning fire ravaged numerous wooden shops in the market and extended its reach to a substantial section of the bridge, engulfing vehicles parked beneath it.
In response to the incident, the Lagos State Government promptly closed the Eko Bridge, providing alternative routes for traffic diversion to ensure the safety of motorists.
The reopening ceremony of Apongbon Bridge was attended by several distinguished individuals, including Olufemi Daramola, the Permanent Secretary of the Office of Infrastructure in the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure, Lagos State. Also present were Mrs. Olukorede Keisha, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, and Lateef Somide, the General Manager of the Lagos State Public Works Corporation.
The reopening of Apongbon Bridge marks a significant milestone for the state, as it signifies the restoration of a crucial transportation route that was disrupted for over a year. Commuters and residents in the area can now breathe a sigh of relief, knowing that normalcy has been restored and their daily commuting patterns will be significantly improved.
Today, I am happy to announce that the hard work and collaboration between the Federal Government and Lagos State Government has paid off with the opening of the Eko Bridge that was closed 15 months ago in March 2022, after a tragic fire.
