Abdulaziz Yari, the former Governor of Zamfara State, emphasised the supremacy of Nigeria’s constitution in his bid to contest the Senate Presidency.
POLITICS NIGERIA reports that this comes after the All Progressives Congress’ National Working Committee endorsed Senator Godswill Akpabio as the preferred candidate for Senate President and Jubrin Barau for Deputy.
During a courtesy visit to the New Nigeria People’s Party leadership in Abuja on Thursday night, Yari expressed his commitment to engaging with relevant stakeholders.
Accompanied by Senator Osita Izunaso, former chairman of the Senate Committees on Gas and Housing, Yari criticised the use of religion to marginalise credible candidates.
Yari announced his intention to reach out to the leadership of other political parties, including the People’s Democratic Party, Labour Party, Young People’s Party, All Progressives Grand Alliance, and the Social Democratic Party, seeking their support.
He asserted, “The constitution holds supreme authority over any other law. Any legislation contradicting the Constitution is null and void. We are fully dedicated to the Nigerian project and firmly believe in the triumph of the constitution.”
Yari stated that he would continue the struggle until the election on the floor of the House, recognising the importance of democratic engagement and the influence of all parties involved.
He emphasised his determination by saying, “It is not over until it is over.”
Regarding the president’s speech, Yari found it encouraging that the president expressed his commitment to govern Nigeria in accordance with the constitution.
The acting national chairman of the NNPP, Abba Kawu-Ali, praised Yari as a competent leader capable of assuming the Senate Presidency.
He expressed confidence in Yari’s abilities based on his two-term tenure as governor of Zamfara State.
