The South East Senate caucus has called on the President-elect, Mr Bola Tinubu, to be mindful of the potential consequences of endorsing a candidate from the South-South for the position of Senate President without considering the South East. The caucus warned that such a move could lead to injustice and restiveness in the region.
This call was made in a communique released by the caucus after a meeting held in Abuja. Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Senator Ifeanyi Uba stated that the lawmakers are urging Mr Tinubu to be sensitive to the current state of Nigeria and ensure that the country continues to promote equity, unity, and fairness.
Senator Uba noted that the country is already divided along ethnic and religious lines, largely due to the exclusion of the Southeast region from key political positions. He emphasized the need for the incoming administration of Mr Tinubu to address this issue by ensuring that the South East is given a fair chance to produce the next Senate President.
The South East Senate caucus expressed concern that any attempt to overlook the region in the appointment of a Senate President would be viewed as a grave injustice, which could trigger unrest and heighten tensions in the area. The lawmakers called on Mr Tinubu to avoid actions that could further widen the gap of distrust and division among the various regions of the country.
The Senate caucus, therefore, called on Mr Tinubu to ensure that the principles of justice and fairness are upheld in the selection of the next Senate President. They emphasized that the South East region has competent and qualified individuals who are capable of occupying the position and contributing positively to the growth and development of the country.
The South East Senate caucus also called on other stakeholders in the country to support the call for fairness and justice in the selection of key political positions. They urged all Nigerians to work towards promoting unity and peaceful coexistence in the country, regardless of ethnic or religious affiliations.
The South East Senate caucus advised the President-elect to be mindful of the implications of his actions and ensure that all regions of the country are given a fair chance to contribute to the development of Nigeria. They also called on Mr Tinubu to demonstrate his commitment to promoting unity and fairness by considering the South East region for the position of Senate President.
