Lagos State Government announces introduction of electric buses into mass transit system

Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced the introduction of the first set of electric buses into the Lagos Mass Transit master plan.

The governor made this known today, April 30, 2023, via his Instagram page.

The initiative is part of the government’s plan to modernize all sectors of Lagos State, and the project is being implemented in collaboration with Oando Plc.

The use of electric buses is expected to provide a cleaner and greener public transportation system for Lagosians.

The electric buses can travel up to 280km at full charge, and this is suitable for Lagos’ unique travel times. The introduction of electric buses will not only reduce carbon emissions but also increase efficiency, thereby reducing high fuel costs and providing cost-efficient transportation.

The government will be running a pilot scheme over the next few months to gather sufficient data to analyze the operational efficiencies relative to the current BRT buses to improve the public transport service.

The governor said charging stations for the electric buses will be strategically placed at public places like malls and gas stations, in partnership with Oando Clean Energy Limited.
