Armed individuals attacked a train station in southern Nigeria’s Edo State and kidnap multiple passengers.
The police spokesperson for the state, Chidi Nwabuzor, reports that the attackers were armed with AK-47 rifles and identified as “herdsmen,” a term used to describe loosely organized bands of armed individuals who used to be cattle herders but have become involved in criminal activities including killing and kidnapping.
Nwabuzor stated that the exact number of kidnappings is currently unknown and that some passengers were left with bullet wounds.
This marks the first attack on a train facility in southern Nigeria and takes place just months before the country’s general elections.
